What Are Values?
2 min read

1. We often start with WHAT, without understanding WHY.
We buy gym memberships, books we plan to read, or promise to spend less time on our phones. But have we asked ourselves WHY, in a deeper sense? Without a meaningful WHY, even a good habit can become just another task.
2. A VALUE is a direction, not a destination.
Value: Vitality — living an active, healthy life. Goal: Run a marathon in six months. Habit: Train regularly. You might never run that marathon or discover you prefer swimming, but you can still live your value.
3. How do you discover YOUR values?
Try any of these three simple exercises:
-
Ask WHY three times to go deeper: "I want to read more." Why? "To learn new things." Why? "To understand the world better." Why? "Because curiosity and growth matter to me."
-
Notice what's missing: What do you wish you had more of in your life? Time with friends? Freedom? Calm? Learning? What deeper value might that reveal?
-
Look back: When did you feel genuinely proud, fulfilled, or most like yourself? For example, perhaps you felt proud after being there for a friend during a difficult time. Was it because being someone others can count on matters to you? Maybe connection or loyalty is one of your values.
Don't look for impressive answers. Look for honest ones.
